About Us
The origins of Kays of Scotland goes back to 1851 when William Kay established his curling stone business using Ailsa Craig granite. The company is a small family owned concern, with all three directors being connected to Andrew Kay and continues to use Ailsa Craig granites, to which it has exclusive rights.

Kays of Scotland have always taken pride in striving to produce the finest curling stones and was instrumental in setting the standard weight of 40lbs for indoor curling stones - adopted throughout the world. Today weight is still an important factor when we match our curling stones using our own computer program.

Granite for the main body of the stone and striking band must be resilient and of suitable molecular structure and the Ailsa Craig Common Green granite displays excellent characteristics in these areas and has a proven record going back over centuries. These are some of the reasons why we took off over 1500 tons of Ailsa Craig granite in the summer of 2001.

Over the years our company has researched the most suitable granites for the various parts of the curling stone, and this extensive research proved that Ailsa Craig Blue/Red Hone granite is the most reliable material for the Running Edge. To enable this to be fitted to the Ailsa Craig Common Green stone body, we have perfected the technique of fitting the Ailsert.

When it was announced that curling was to be included in the Nagano 1998 Winter Olympics as a medal sport, the committee requested that Kays of Scotland manufacture the finest curling stones which have ever been produced for use in the competition. This was a great opportunity to our design and innovation team and resulted in establishing a special Running Edge for Arena conditions.

We believe that the combination of our experience and our continued commitment to excel in product quality and service are the main reasons for the World Curling Federation placing their orders for stones to be used at major events such as Salt Lake City Olympics with Kays of Scotland.
